I feel as though my last entry was scolding, so, as a summer treat, I looked up the many Barba-cousins. Limited to offspring of LVR's full-sister and half-sisters. So far, have found around thirty.Aunt of the Barbaro brothers, Lucky Lavender Gal, has 5 Lavender babies including '05 mare Lavender Luck by Sky Mesa. '08 cousin Desert Hawk by First Samurai, and unnamed '10 colt by Hard Spun.

For too curious parties, The mares bred (Stallion Report) is due August of the breeding year-to the Jockey Club. I think the owners don't want everyone to be so interested in the internal workings of their mare. Would you ask a friend over and over again if their daughter was pregnant?

Ok! Ok! so neither Nicanor or Lentenor ran in any of the Triple Crown races. So what? Those races were for Barbaro and perhaps Margano. In the meantime Nicanor and Lentenor will be taking other paths to greatness. In fact, for all FOBs that I know are disappointed, I would suggest "Think 2012! How's this for a scenario? Not only does Margano win the Triple Crown but he also scores the Breeders Cup Classic. Nicanor and Lenetenor will have honed their skills and found not only their niche but the perfect match with a jockey to guide them, and they win also win the Breeders Cup races in their respective catagories. Cross your fingers.

Wanted to add one more thing about Barbaeo's training in Florida, Jill Stephens
was training Barbaro and every morning when he say her coming down to saddle him he would break out into a little dance and when he ran in the Derby, he new she was there. having keep up with Barbaro
on a daily basis and his growth spurts, I predict that Margano, will
be the next Barbaro.

Seeing Margano was quite a shock, he was standing by two workmen and is a monstrous horse for a year old.
Which reminds me when Barbaro was shipped to the Stevans in Ocala, Florida. for training and the Stephens
wanted him loaded back up. because they didn't train horses that age, thinking he was 21\2 or 3 years old.
It was then he was introduced to Barbaro, and given his papers stating he was only a year old, Stephens said
"Good Grief, he's the biggest most developed one year old I've ever seen, in my 20 some odd years of training horses , and the rest is history. when he shellacked 19 of the world's best three year old's in the Kentucky Derby.

Lightning in a Bottle...An expression that I truly believe in. Secretariat,ManO'War,Seabiscuit, and even Cigar---all were exceptions. Thats why we will always remember them. Not to get to religious here, I believe that every once in a while GOD reaches down and touches a foal and says,"This One". BARBARO,may have been one of those. He may have been the one meant to remind us all what COURAGE looks like. ( happy birthday Barbaro in heaven )
Wonder if we learned anything with his life...Kindness, thoughtfullness, and caring is needed in our world its so easy to write words and unfortunately mean them but we are past that..Barbaro meant what he had to say and showed great behaviour for one that could not talk...we need to take lessons from him...

loieb, I will tell you a little story about, Barbaro he was a fabulous horse that comes along once in a lifetime, millions of people had a dream that he would win the triple
crown. After his dominating victory in the Kentucky Derby, we were sure of that and that was still our dream. Then a terrible accident occured, but we still had our dream, and for eight months he lived, and we still had our dream. he struggled to the end, but alas he didn't quite make it. this put an end to our dream. but Mrs Jackson, who had fed Barbaro fresh grass from Lael farm on a daily basis came to us with another dream, when she said, don't feel sad don't be dismayed, I'll have reinforcements on the way. and our dream was again re-kindled, with the legacy of the hounds. She was true to her word. Along came Nicanor then Lentenor and even babynor has a hounds name and our dream continued at least it did until we find out that Calypso will never be part of the legacy of the hounds, because the name was taken [under some strange circumstances] another dream shattered. Will the Jackson's quit breeding LVR to Dynaformer, maybe this is the end of the legacy of the hounds, does this put a stop to cloning another Barbaro, or one even greater?
So loieb you won, I hope your satisfied, because the FOB's can be real resentful when their dream is over.

Here's some interesting information about your horse. From the looks of things all through breeds are required to have
to have papers. It seems like this was not the case, please read about it.
Flying W Farms Calypso
bay gelding foaled July 29, 1995.
Sire Springdale Benedictine Prince Clydesdale #C31393
Mother Summer Song, unraced Thoroughbred mare.
The mother was definitely thoroughbred but we never had her papers.Summer Song is the name we gave her.

Am excited that Lentenor will be racing on the 17th. Will have fingers & toes crossed. NY Times interviewed Michael and it looks if all goes well that he will be nominated for one of the Triple Crown races, may not be the Derby but maybe the Preakness. Would love it if that was true, would love to see him finish what Barbaro did not have the chance to do.

May Barbaro's legacy of courage continue to be an inspiration to find a cure for laminitis, improve racehorse safety and improved procedures to save all horses with tragic leg fractures. Thank you again to the Jackson's for allowing us to continue being a part of the journey.

Barbaro will live in out hearts and memories forever, he was an inspiration to all of us, he had so much grace and beauty and God given talent, he had everything but "length of years". he is a true champion, though for all he did "off" the track and all the courage he displayed under the worst of fate. He has done more for his breed than any other and has inspired all of us to give from the heart to find a cure for Laminitis, beacause the break of bone did not kill him it was the laminitis, which has taken so many from us including the Great Secretariat to name one of the thousands. Please donate every month, not just today, God Bless Barbaro's Family and keep them save, may they run with the wind and God's Blessings

"Barbaro"
It was an ordinary day at the Rainbow Bridge, sunny and warm, and all the creatures were playing or resting while waiting for their people who had loved them on Earth.
Suddenly the tranquility was broken by a sound like thunder, which most residents could just barely remember. The sound got louder and louder, a powerful, rhythmic pounding until a crowd formed to see what it could possibly be.
Finally, within a cloud of dust appeared a magnificent stallion, snorting and galloping across the Rainbow Bridge into eternity. The animals knew that Barbaro had arrived, on four strong legs, never to limp or be in pain again, while he waits for all his people who loved him so much....

I am so very sorry, Mr. Bell. You and everyone at Mill Ridge must be broken up about the loss of La Ville Rouge's filly. I am certain that you have great affection and excitement over the birth and healthy life of every one of your hundreds of young ones, and the beautiful mares there. So I want to express heartfelt condolences for what you all have gone through. Though there is much good news with Lentenor recently, Nicanor and of course the young one you still have in your charge, this must have been trying. And to the Jacksons, I am sorry you had to take another blow of sadness. But we all look to the future . . . and so much joy to come.

Mr.Bell, this news broke our hearts, we FOBs. Is La Ville rouge all right? Our sorrow has turned to worries about our Lovely LVR. This may take some time for us to get over, despite the great joy over Lentenor's impressive win yesterday. We have the 3rd anniversary of Barbaro's death coming up shortly. How is baby LVR2009, whom we all call Babynor -- has he been officially named yet? Thank you for the time you take to respond to us, the faithful FOBs.

Wo sorry to hear about the unborn foal of LVR. Sometimes things happen for a reason and we aren't always privy to what that reason may be right away. Hope the mare recovers and is fine. My condolances to all of the Family's connections.
On a much lighter note, congrats, Lentenor. Way to go on that final turn and down the stretch. Good job. How's Nicanor? It seems that we've not heard anything about for ages. Hope that bone bruise is finally a thing of the past and the big guy will be at the track soon.

I regret to inform the general public that LA VILLE ROUGE aborted her foal on December 24, 2009. It is particularly sad for she was believed to be carrying a full sister to BARBARO. Nice 1st start for Lentenor. It's a little hard to see all that much in a race on TV. I'm in Nebr. and had to watch the race via simulcasting (also alternated between watching races and our football game). Looked like the colt wasn't all that bothered by being in a crowd. Had to make a move coming out of the turn and going into the stretch. I thought he did a good job of going around horses. He should have learned a great deal in this race. Often times, young horses think they know everything their 2nd start. Looks like this colt may have a good head on him and doesn't get fractious. But, again, didn't get to see all that much via TV. Good job, Lentenor and Better Luck next time.

Wow. I am still in shock that LVR is finally going to have a filly. The first filly in a male-dominated family. LVR has had colts since retiring to the breeding shed. I still can't wait til next March. Hopefully she'll foal sooner. We can only hope and cross our fingers. Good luck LVR!! Lentenor, we're hoping you show the talent that Barbaro showed!!! Maybe the talent skips every other full brother.

PATIENCE!!! Easy to say. Difficult to exercise. However: it has been noted several times before that foals from this family line tend to be "late bloomers" Anyway, by next year (its not that far away) hopefully Nicanor will have recovered and be making a name for himself as a four year old turf specialist, Lentenor will be making his debut as a three year old, the youngest boy will have a name and THE FILLY will arrive safely after an uneventful pregnancy for LaVille Rouge. For now how about just all the prayers, best wishes and loads of luck to all these magnificent horses and the people who care for them?

Nicanor, the full brother to Barbaro and the 7-2 morning-line favorite for the $750,000 Virginia Derby on Saturday at Colonial Downs in New Kent, Va., was scratched from the race Friday after suffering an unspecified injury to his hind end the previous afternoon.
"We took him out of his stall to walk him and graze him, and he was very stiff in behind," trainer Michael Matz said from his Fair Hill training center headquarters. "I don't know if it's anything serious or long-term. Nothing turned up on X-rays, so we sent him to New Bolton to have a nuclear scintigraphy done on him to see if something can be found."
Nicanor was coming off back-to-back turf wins at Delaware Park and was scheduled to make his stakes debut in the Grade 2 Virginia Derby.
"It's disappointing because we were all very much looking forward to going down there to watch him," Matz said. "But we certainly wouldn't take any chances, so we'll just have to get him right and look forward to something else down the line."
The defection of Nicanor left a field of nine 3-year-olds in the Virginia Derby.

OK. This is the one you’ve been waiting for -- the stakes debut of Nicanor. But you can be sure, Saturday’s Virginia Derby is going to be a real trial by fire for Barbaro’s full brother. He will break from post position 4 under Jose Lexcano in the 10-horse field.
While Nicanor has shown great potential on turf for owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson with two wins in as many starts on grass after two second-place finishes on the main track, he definitely has never faced the type of other 3-year-olds he will be competing against here, in a grade II race with $750,000 purse.
The class of the race is Battle of Hastings, a British-bred trained by Jeff Mullins. The gelding has five wins and a second in 10 career starts, all on turf. His best effort came in his last race, over the same turf course at Colonial Downs, when he rallied for a narrow victory in the Colonial Turf Cup (gr. IIT).
As if that wasn’t enough, Straight Story and Lime Rickey, who were second and third in the Turf Cup, are returning in the Derby. Also, the race drew grade II winner Hold Me Back, who had a troubled trip to finish 12th in the Kentucky Derby and will be making his turf debut here.

As most know, the world-famous Barbaro was born at Mill Ridge Farm, where Headley Bell is the managing partner. Bell's family has the reputation of being excellent horsemen. His mother Alice Chandler was the founder of Mill Ridge Farm, his grandfather Hal Price Headley was one of the founders of Keeneland, and previous generations of horsemen have established high standards and very big boots to fill. The ultimate satisfaction for Headley Bell is breeding racehorses, and in his association with his clients he has had wonderful success as a mating consultant. This has been demonstrated by winners Honor in War (G1), Strut the Stage (G2), Breeders Cup Mile winner Artie Schiller (G1) and Barbaro, the leading three year old of 2006 and Kentucky Derby winner.
Mrs. Gretchen Jackson said when Barbaro was hurt, "Don't worry, reinforcements are on the way," and now that statement rings true, full-brother reinforcements bearing the names of Nicanor, Lentenor, "Babynor," not yet officially named, and a wonderful filly yet to be born. Our dream of a Triple-Crown winner lives on, thanks to Dynaformer, LaVilla Rouge, and Headley Bell, a true breeding genius. We can never re-pay all of the happiness he and his horses have brought to our lives. David M Letell

I was reminded recently by a friend of an article I wrote several years ago, called "'Big Train' Barbaro," so I'll re-post
this very heart-warming story for his many friends and litterly thousands of Barbaro's fans worldwide.
"Big Train" Barbaro
When I was raised in Westlake, Louisiana, my home was located just two blocks from the Southern Pacific tracks.
We kids would go down and watch the beautiful silver train the famous Sunset Limited roar past on its weekly journey
to California. We could put our ears to the tracks and hear it coming for several miles. When we heard it coming, we would all get very excited and jump up and down and clap our hands and shout with glee, here comes the "Big Train."
Here comes the "Big Train"!
That's exactly what came to my mind when the Kentucky Derby announcer Tom Durkin, who called the Derby, said,
"Here comes the big unbeaten colt, Barbaro! He has suddenly lengthened his big stride and broken away on the
outside and is really flying! Barbaro has swept past the front runners Keyed Entry and Sinister Minister and now has
taken over the lead! Barbaro has now broken into the clear and is really pouring it on! He's running away from the
field, and now the race is all Barbaro! He has just won the Kentucky Derby by seven lengths!"
The only thing I could think of then when Tom Durkin was calling the race was of my childhood days when we
used to jump up and down and shout, "Here comes the 'Big Train'! Here comes the 'Big Train'"!
I believe "Big Train" Barbaro, would have easily won the triple crown and take his rightful place as one of the
greatest thoroughbreds of all times. He was an unworldly courageous champion who inspired us all and who will
forever be cherished as our "Big Train"!

Have you ever wondered
why Barbaro was such
an excellent horse and champion, here's the reason.
"Barbaro had an unconventional breeze at Churchill-fast and a very long stride (over 25 feet). His internal speed figures were super, best of the week. This woman (who is not a fan of his) told me Secretariat's stride was 23 feet. Barbaro never really quickened--he simply extended his long stride down the stretch and showed complete superiority. He had a stride length of 24 feet going into the first turn, on the backstretch and on the far turn. He maintained the same basic speed for each quarter to the end--but when he hit the stretch, he extended his stride length to 24.9 feet. Thus, he covered the last quarter in fewer strides than he took for each previous quarter. For another horse to beat him that horse would have to have been on even terms at the quarter pole and had a stride length of a minimum of 25 feet down the stretch. And that would have been a real stretch.

Does anyone think Nicky has a chance at making it to the Breeders Cup this year?
I wonder if Lenny will start racing as a 2 yr old. If so, he may have a better chance at making it to the Derby next year. *Crosses Fingers*

When I was watching the Preakness the year that Barbaro was hurt, I sobbed. I cried so hard and blamed myself, because I loved him that much. When I found out he was headed to New Bolton Center at the Universtiy of Pennsylvania, I instantly ran up to my father and told him that he was going to take me there that weekend. I demanded it from him. I wrote the owners a letter saying how I could not believe that this happened, and how much I loved Barbaro, and I even asked if I could take him home, or own him. I was desprate to hug Barabro, and to see him in person. I honestly believed that they might let me have him. I really loved him, and I still think about him sometimes. I miss him, and I hope that Nicanor can follow in his footsteps.

Watching the HBO documentary"Barbaro".. How very sad to see such a beautiful being suffer and leave the physical world. I love horses. When I was growing up, my dad always let me pick horses from the race list in newspapers. I loved watching the races. Hope Barbaro's brothers can carry on the title.

Nicanor, Barbaro's full brother who broke his maiden by 15 more than lengths in his first start on grass, breezed 3 furlongs in :37 at Fair Hill on Wednesday, June 3.
Trainer Michael Matz said the son of Dynaformer “worked very well” under exercise rider and assistant trainer Peter Brette.
Also, Matz said Nicanor has been entered in a 1 1/16-mile grass race on Saturday’s Belmont Stakes card at Belmont Park but he is unlikely to get in. The next opportunity for the colt to start would be a grass race at Delaware Park in a couple of weeks.
Nicanor is among the early nominees to the $500,000 Colonial Turf Cup (gr. IIT) June 20 and $750,000 Virginia Derby (gr. IIT) July 18 at Colonial Downs. Matz said it has not been decided whether the colt would run in the Colonial Turf Cup.

I read Big Brown's Sire was no longer being used for stud purposes. That Big Brown was his last foal so if this is the case LVR could'nt be bred to him. I think breeding her to Dynaformer is a match made in heaven. And Nic might not have made the Kentucky Derby but I still see lots of hope for him. And can't wait to see Lentenor race. I still remember the video of him when he was born shortly after Barbaro passed on and they said here's to the 2010 Kentucky Derby. I am really waiting to see him start runnng.

After a steady rain gave way to overcast skies, Woolley and Allen made their way to the front gate of Churchill Downs.
They placed the winner's garland of red roses on the recently unveiled statue of Barbaro, the 2006 Derby winner who broke down in the Preakness and had to be euthanized nine months later.
After fans had a chance to take photos, the garland was removed. The two men then stripped the blanket of its flowers and handed them out to a long line of fans, some of whom told Woolley and Allen they had cashed big win tickets on Mine That Bird.

4/29/2009
I am appreciative of the fans patience with our communication on La Ville Rouge and her '09 colt. The '09 Dynaformer colt had an infected umbilical vein and eventually had surgery to remove this infection. Thankfully he is recovering very well from this surgery and yesterday was turned out into a small paddock and is enjoying the green grass and sunshine.
La Ville Rouge was bred on Sunday to Dynaformer and we will learn if she is pregnant in about 2 weeks.

Nicanor Back at Home at Fair Hill
After spending some time at Keeneland in Lexington this April, Nicanor returned home to Fair Hill in Maryland.
The 3-year-old Dynaformer colt posted a work out there April 28, breezing five furlongs in 1:01.4. The time was the fastest of three at that distance.
Trainer Michael Matz said Nicanor will most likely race next at Delaware Park.

La Ville Rouge produced another full brother to Barbaro March 10 at 10:45pm. The colt weighs 142 pounds, and is by Dynaformer.
He is a good size colt with plenty of leg and size as indicative of his weight. A bay colt, he only has a marking on the center of his forehead. Both mom and baby are well.

I found this and thought it was beautiful as Dynaformer's Line is from Man O War although he is like Mr. Prospector, everyone is from them LOLOLOL
Hold your strength till the barriers fly,
then close with the leaders eye to eye.
Thundering hooves and the mad jammed race,
blood in the nostrils, sweat in the face.
And children, remember wherever you are,
you carry the blood of Man o' War.

I am sad today remembering our dear, beloved Barbaro on the 2nd anniversary of his untimely death. I know he is in a better place, pain-free, happy and running on 4 healthy legs with Seabiscuit, Secretariat, and all the greats who have passed over the rainbow bridge to horse heaven! But I am also excited and filled with anticicipation over Nicanor's debut on Saturday! I don't even care if he wins, as long as he crosses the finish line happy and healthy. But he has that blood line of a champion and with Edgar on his back, well, anything is possible! Godspeed Nicanor and Edgar Prado! Bless you Michael Matz and the Jacksons and all who have taken such good care of Nicanor! Thanks for your patience with him and allowing him to grow! He is a very big boy! I only wish it was being simulcast up here in NH at Rockingham.

As his racing debut nears, Nicanor continues to work steadily at Palm Meadows Training Center. He completed a five furlong work handily in 1:01.2 over the dirt track Jan. 25, which ranked eighth out of 38 works at that distance.
“He’s working well, and he had a very nice work this morning,” said trainer Michael Matz.
Barring something unexpected, Nicanor will make his racing debut either the weekend of Jan. 31 or Feb. 7 at Gulfstream Park. Additionally, jockey Edgar Prado will be aboard. Prado rode Nicanor’s famed full brother Barbaro to victory in the 2006 Run for the Roses.
“Edgar is going to ride him. He’s probably going to run in a week or two,” said Matz. “He’s getting there, getting close.”
The 3-year-old Dynaformer colt has shown the ability to run on dirt, turf, and synthetic surfaces during his workouts, which leaves his connections with several options.
“There is a dirt race next weekend, and there is a turf race the following weekend,” said Matz. “He will go in one of the two races. We have to see how he comes out of his work, and see what we want to do--run him on the dirt or run him on the turf for his first start.”

I cant remember where I saw this article but it talked about Nicanor and how he isnt expected to make the derby this year because he is starting his career too late. They said it would be to much of a challenge to ask a horse for that with hardly any experience. Is there any truth to this?
|
Nicole
1/19/2009
Nicanor breezed four furlongs in :50.4 at Palm Meadows Jan 17., as he continues working steadily toward his racing debut.
The 3-year-old Dynaformer colt worked on dirt and ranked 14 out of 29 horses that went that distance.
According to a press release from Gulfstream Park, trainer Michael Matz is considering entering Nicanor sometime during the last weekend of January.
“I’m not sure there’s a race scheduled for him,” said Matz. “I would love to get him into a race those days.”
If Nicanor raced that weekend, it would be somewhat bittersweet as it would coincide with the Holy Bull Stakes (gr. III), which Barbaro won in 2006 for his first victory on dirt.
“He has really matured a lot just in the last month,” said Matz of Nicanor.

Ok, this is a reply to a comment that was put on here a few months ago and I don't remember who but it was how Barbaro and Eight Belles were related and I wanted to say that all 20 horses in the '08 Kentucky Derby were related meening not just Barbaro and Eight Belles were related but its possible that Barbaro was related to all those horses in the Kentucky Derby. But, as most of you know, most race horses, currently racing or retired, are related to each other.
If anyone ever visits the website, FanFiction, I wanted to inform you that I have an account on there, Ponypal95, and I have a story on there called, In Memory Of Barbaro'
Peace,

After posting his first official turf workout Jan. 5, Nicanor was back to the dirt Jan. 11. The 3-year-old Dynaformer colt worked five furlongs handily in 1.01:35 while breaking from the starting gate at Palm Meadows. His workout ranked fifth out of 22 at that distance.
This was Nicanor’s third gate work. His first came in June while at Fair Hill in Maryland, and he also broke from the gate Dec. 28. At that time, he completed three furlongs in :36.50.
According to trainer Michael Matz, Nicanor’s racing debut could come at the end of January or early February. The colt’s first race is highly anticipated by many racing fans due to the fact he is a full brother to Barbaro. Nicanor has now posted works on dirt, turf, and synthetic surfaces, meaning his connections have several options to choose from when the horse begins his racing career.
“He’s doing very well, and now (his first start) will depend on which race comes first in the timeframe we’re looking at,” said Matz in a Gulfstream Park press release. “If a maiden race comes up at seven-eighths or a mile we can go there, or if we want to race around two turns we can go to the turf. It will just depend on what we want to do when he’s ready.”

Nicanor posted a three-furlong work Dec. 28 at Palm Meadows. The Dynaformer colt, who will officially turn 3 on Jan. 1, completed the distance handily in :36.50 while breaking from the starting gate.
The bay colt was the second fastest of 15 who worked at that distance.
Nicanor's last official work was Dec. 19, when he went five furlongs in 1.01:80

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone at Mill Ridge, and all the readers of this blog. To the Jackson Family, an eternal Thank You for making the information about our "god sons" available to us. following Barbaro's life along with the brothers has brought me back to being around and loving horses after a tragic accident years ago, in which my beloved cousin passed away while preparing to dismount. I have much to be thankful for, and Barbaro's family is a part of that. with love and a deep thank you!!

Nicanor Works, Heads to Florida
17 Nov 2008 10:18 AM
6 Comments
On Nov. 16, Nicanor had his first official work since the beginning of July. He went three furlongs in :38 seconds flat.
"It was an uneventful work," said trainer Michael Matz. "He did his job and went fine."
Nicanor's work came over the all weather training surface at Fair Hill, and it was the fastest of three done at that distance. The 2-year-old Dynaformer colt's last work was July 11, when he completed four furlongs in :50 flat.
On the morning of Nov. 17, Nicanor left Fair Hill and headed down to Florida to continue his training through the winter.
“We just put him on a van to go to Florida,” said Matz. “He’s still growing. He’s got to be at least 16.2-16.3 hands. He’s not as long as Barbaro was, so he is really a big boy. The whole family was that way; they are just late to mature.”
As a result, chances are Nicanor will not make his racing debut in 2008.
“My guess is that he probably will not race within the next two months,” said Matz. “If he did, it would be at the end of the year.”

I ran across this article and thought I would share it with all
ELKTON, Md. — The bay colt Nicanor has never been tested and has never raced, but he is already special. His every start, even his every move, will be followed and scrutinized, and the expectations will be tremendous. Barbaro’s little brother is getting there, nearing a race, ready to answer the tantalizing question of whether he, too, has what it takes to be a star.
Jamie Rose for The New York Times
Peter Brette, an assistant trainer, and Nicanor during a workout. Nicanor could make his racing debut as early as this fall.
“Obviously, those are big shoes that he has to fill,” the trainer Michael Matz said as Nicanor and six other 2-year-olds jogged in front of his watchful eye at the Fair Hill Training Center in Maryland earlier this week.
There are none bigger. Barbaro won the 2006 Kentucky Derby before losing his fight for survival that began when broke his right hind leg in the Preakness. His story captivated the nation, which will no doubt gobble up this next chapter as well.
Now 2, the age at which many horses make their racing debuts, Nicanor was transferred to Matz’s stable from a Florida training center May 1. Under the care of John Stephens at Stephens Thoroughbreds in Morriston, Fla., he made the transformation from gawky yearling to racehorse. It is Matz’s job to turn him into a winner.
Nicanor is now preparing for his first race. Matz, who was also the trainer of Barbaro, is not the type of trainer to push his young horses. Nicanor has yet to do much in the way of serious training, but each day is a progression that will lead to his first start.
Barring any setbacks, he could make his debut as soon as the early fall. Barbaro made his debut on Oct. 4 of his 2-year-old year, winning a maiden special weight race on the grass at Delaware Park.
How good is Nicanor? That question is difficult to answer at this stage. Matz will know more when he starts to ask for speed in morning workouts, which he has yet to do. The real answers, however, will not come until Nicanor shows what he can do on the racetracks in the afternoon, in actual competition.
There are some hints, though. He appears to be athletic, is put together well and has a good disposition. He also seems curious and intelligent. Like Barbaro, he has a habit of taking in the scenery when he goes to the track in the mornings. He will peer at his surroundings before he tells his exercise rider that he is ready to go.
“He just seems like he has a very good attitude, and he’s very well balanced and very well made,” Matz said. “At this point, that’s all we can ask for. He gallops well and moves well. We haven’t worked him fast or anything like that, but everybody that rides him says he feels like he’s a very powerful horse.”
None of those attributes are guarantees. Neither are his bloodlines. With some 35,000 foals born in this country each year, the odds that brothers will both win the Kentucky Derby are astronomical. Far more often than not, the siblings of famous horses do not pan out.
The owner and trainer of a 3-year-old filly named Elusive Moment are reminded of that every time she races. Elusive Moment, a full sister to the 2004 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Smarty Jones, has never finished better than fourth in five career starts. In her most recent start, she finished last in an April 26 maiden race at Delaware Park, losing by 24 lengths.
“It’s just like with any family, you’ll have one child who turns out to be a big success and the others are just tagalongs,” said Ed Gaudet, the trainer of Elusive Moment. “This filly has perfect conformation and she’s shown us some brilliance at times. Sure, she’s been a disappointment. My dad told me when I was young, you control something that is mechanical. You can take a truck and put in the spark plugs, carburetor, fuel pump, and it will run great. It doesn’t work that way with horses. They are flesh and blood and you have no control over flesh and blood.”
Nicanor’s owners understand that.
“We have to tell ourselves that the chance of having another one that is equally as good as Barbaro is very rare,” said Gretchen Jackson, who, along with her husband, Roy, owned Barbaro and will also race Nicanor. “My hope is that he is a good racehorse. What exactly that means, I’m not quite sure yet.”
The Jacksons are ready to do everything they can to achieve a too-good-to-be-true story. Since Barbaro, they have continued to breed the mare La Ville Rouge back to Barbaro’s sire, Dynaformer. The mating has also produced another full brother to Barbaro, a yearling named Lentenor, and the mare is again in foal to the 23-year-old stallion.
The names come from a painting of foxhounds owned by the Jacksons. Barbaro is the name of one of the six foxhounds pictured; the others are Nicanor, Lentenor, Margano, Sereno and Calypso. As long as Barbaro’s siblings keep coming along, the Jacksons plan to continue to use names from the painting.
It is all part of the Barbaro legacy, which everyone involved seems happy to embrace. It brings back memories, joyful and otherwise.
“I’m always hoping Nicanor will be as good as Barbaro,” Gretchen Jackson said. “I’ve gone down twice to see him since he got to Fair Hill. It’s fun to be down there, fun to be around him. When I see him, there is a certain happiness and sadness combined. It’s a very emotional thing for me. When I see him, I like to rub my hands down his legs. It makes me feel like I’m back in touch with Barbaro.”

ya remember the filly eight belles? well you might already know this but the reason (some what) for barbaro and eight belles breaking down is due to the fact that they share the same ancestor. grandfather or great grandfater i think. lav and dyna make great foals....but are they really that great??? dont hate me for saying this. i only found out about B when he was in the hospital... have TONS of pics, of them all. i hope the misfortune doent befall nic and lentenor.

Cortney,
Nicky is having a growth spurt he won't race during this, his growth plates are not sealed yet and his muscles need to catch up to his growth, to race him would be irresponsible they are doing the correct thing with this baby, waiting out the spurt and then go back to training, there are quite a few horses who do not race as two year olds, what is best for the horse is what we want, if he never races that is fine too, he will do what he is destined to do and he is in very good hands....

Andrew Beyer is the father of the Beyer Speed Figure. He is a world famous handicapper and columnist for the Washington Post. His book, Picking Winners, revolutionized handicapping with the introduction and explanation of speed figures. The idea behind speed figures is simple - the easiest way to measure one race horse against another is by how fast it runs. Beyer devised a system that assigns a number - a speed figure - to each horse's performance in a race. If every horse ran over a standard surface at the same distance we could compare their speeds simply by looking at their finishing times. Beyer's idea is to be able to compare horses who run over different surfaces (fast tracks, slow tracks, etc.) and different distances. In theory, a horse that earns a 100 speed figure running 7 furlongs at Keeneland should be faster than a horse that earns a 92 running one mile at Saratoga.
The creation or computation of Beyer Speed figures is a laborious and time consuming process. Thankfully, the figures are published in the Daily Racing Form, and the average handicapper can take advantage of them without spending hours compiling data.
The process used to create Beyer's speed figures involves creating par times for races. If a large number of $10,000 claiming races at different tracks are compiled and it is determined that the average winning time at six furlongs is 1:12 and 1:45 for 1 1/16 mile races, then it can be assumed that those two times would have the same speed rating. Lets say they earn a speed rating of 70. The other piece of the puzzle is to look at track variants. Some tracks are inherently fast or slow. Keeneland is a track that is notoriously fast, so a $10,000 claimer that runs 6 furlongs in 1:10 at Keeneland would have to have his figure adjusted downward to compensate for the fast track he is running on. Likewise, a horse running on a slow track would have his figure raised in compensation. In addition to adjusting figures for fast and slow tracks, daily variants are also used to account for the daily changes in the racing surface.
Handicappers often want to equate a speed figure with a race level and in general a horse that runs in the high 100's is a stakes caliber horse, while one who earns figures in the 80-90 range may be a high priced claimer and a horse who earns a speed figure in the low 50's may be a $5,000 claimer.
Beyer Speed Figures are a fantastic handicapping tool but even Andrew Beyer himself would tell you that you cannot rely on speed figures alone. They are one of many valuable tools that you should use to handicap a race. Automatically giving the edge to a horse that earned a 95 rating in his last race over the horse that earned an 85 could be a huge mistake if the horse that earned the 85 had a horrible trip, bad ride, and broke slow. taken from a website, not my own words

Courtney,
you don't have to event to be a rider:) and always, always, always get back on a horse that has tossed you off LOL, look her in the eye, let her know she can trust you, speak gently, and get back up :) xoxoxo

Stephanie Lambert, Well there is a rescue ranch that lets me ride for 10 dollars an hour but I've only rode there once and then I found a farm that would let me ride for free but I haven't been there yet.I ride western and don't have my own horse so its not like I could really event! My uncle lives about 2 miles away and has a Tennessee Walker Mare so I go Over there all the time but I can't ride her because she through me off last year and I fractured my wriste! He keeps her more as a pet then anything and she is a perfect pet, just not a good riding horse! He's actually selling her but I don't think anyone will buy her! So he sorta teaches me stuff but I'm a huge horse freak anyway so I know most things ! More Later!

Also Stephanie Lambert, Do you know when Big Brown's next race is? i read it somewhere but I can't remember when it is! I know he is racing in one or two more races before the Breeders Cup but I can't remember when!

Courtney,
How wonderful it is to have such a young person getting involved with horses, ask your family if you can take riding lessons,I took equestrian lessons until I was 18 and it was the center of my life. You will learn to care for the horse as well as ride it , you will be able to communicate with the horse in a very special way, no animal will touch your soul as an equine does. If you cannot afford it ask around some of the centers (stables that teach) near you and see if you can trade out chores for lessons, I did this for many years at Foxboro as my brother trained horses there in the 60's and 70's.
God Bless You Honey and remember to keep your heels down :) xoxoxoxo

To Courtney,
I believe in my heart that Nicanor will win two of the Triple Crown,my gut tells me Lentenor is the next Triple Crown winner.I feel as if this family of siblings starting with Barbaro are going to heal all of our hearts in the crazy world of thoroughbred racing so we can all see the bright spots. Never give up on it sometimes it really hurts when tragedies occur but there is so much more that is good, Barbaro taught us that.

To Stephanie Lambert, Do you know a lot about the barbaro bros...well i kno you must know a lot but are you like from kentucky or something and whatever...? see I'm 13 and just starting to really get into horse racing!I mean I watched Barbaro win the derby and fall the preakness but on TV...anyway could you tell me anything else i might not know?
|
~Courtney~
8/29/2008
Tracy, Do you think one of the barbaro bros will make it to the kentucky derby? I want so badly for one to make the next triple crown winner!

8/28/2008
To those who always want to know when Nicky will race....here is the answer...when and if he is ever ready to race, He will be the judge and so will his trainers, Michael will know when as he always does, That is why he is in charge of this beautiful baby, I personally say do not rush him, let him be a baby for a little while longer and enjoy his life before the demands on him start, he is a happy go lucky horse right now with not a care in the world, asking when he is going to race is like asking my son, when are you going to pitch in the major leagues LOL although he plays for the Nationals now, I never would have asked him at two years old to "hurry" up LOL, Just all be patient and let him grow to be strong and enjoy his childhood, it will be gone in a blink as it is with all children :)

Barbaro captured our hearts because he was ALL heart. He had length of srtide but not of years. He represented any horse that ever broke down anywhere, although his owners were so much better than most, so in love with him, as it should always be. Anyone who has ever lost an animal they loved felt Mr. & Mrs. Jacksons pain. Barbaro acted like the champion he was during all his surgeries remaining happy and well behaved to help his own healing, it was not the breakdown that killed him but the laminitis which takes so many lives each year. That is why it is so important to find a cure for this debilitating disease.Barbaro was a TRUE CHAMPION for all the equine world, showing us what True Grit really is, showing us what True Love can accomplish, showing the world what Real Courage is....He has my heart forever, he taught me a lot about life.

8/16/2008
I watched Barbaro's breathtaking derby, and again watched at the heartbreaking preakness. I checked aol everyday for any news i could find on barbaro. as soon as i found articles saying he was recovering well, i slowed down. Months later i learned that he had laminitis. I was devastated and went back to checking everyday. When i learned that he had to be euthanized, i cried. I bought the beanie baby that was made of him, and tried to get the breyer model with no success. I read a book, and am trying to read the new one written by edgar prado. Thank you for giving me hope after the deaths of so many horses; barbaro, pine island, ruffian, george washington, eight belles, and so many more. Thank you for the awesome videos and pictures of Nicanor and Lentenor. Two horses i will follow as they try to follow in Barbaro's footsteps. I hope they succeed and show the world what barbaro would have been. Watching the videos made me cry seeing how much he and nicanor look like barbaro. Good luck to all.

Every time I see an interview with Mr. Bell I understand why these horses are so happy and well adjusted. Every horse should have someone like him, he is so intuitive with horses, I think he was a horse in his former life.....Excellent good work Mr. Bell, you are and amazing horseman and the Jacksons and their horses are blessed to have you.

I think Barbaro's story touched people because of his owners, trainer, jockey and Dr.Richardson.It made people aware it was not met to take away from other such similar situations.Maybe it was to remind us the owning a racehorse or family pet is a two way street between owner and pet and the responsibilty it involves.

I loved Barbaro even though I never met him, and he was such a brave and valiant horse. There will truely never be another Barbaro. Barbaro pics are my computer's screensaver. I am lucky enough to live ten minutes from Fair Hill, I'm very close to Nicanor physically. Of course, like anyone who has followed Barbaro's story, I would love to see Nicanor or Lentanor (Or the future Margano, Sereno or Calypso, those are the other three foxhounds!!!) even start to finish the legacy that Barbaro began. But even if they don't, even if they are no good at racing, I will love them no less. I love them the same as I love the foal at our stables. I expect great things from them, but if they cant live up to expectations, that's still fine with me. They carry much more weight on their shoulders, they carry the hopes and dreams of millions and they carry a legacy that has extended from before they where born, before they are old enough to walk on a race track.

8/14/2008
Clare, the reason Barbaro is and always will be special to all of us was because of his struggle to survive and all of us praying he would recover. It is sad that any horse has to be put down because of an accident on the race track ever. I felt very bad myself about Eight Belles. They do seem to be taking measures finally to prevent some of this although accidents will always happen in any sport. I love Barbaro and I will never forget and I wish the best for his family including his human family.

Clare
8/14/2008
You know Everyone tells me that barbaro was the one and only. The worlds horse. Now I cant understand what its like to lose a horse, but the that fact is what about all the other race horses that have broken down and past should we just forget them cus there wasnt picture after picture of him braking down. I dont know what im really trying to say. but i think you understand a bit? And ppl relax freedom of speech.

I live in Louisville and have never been to the derby til 2006. I was lucky enough to see Barbaros finest moment. Watching him run with such grace will be something that I never forget. I knew we would see a triple crown winner. Everyone knows the rest the story. Barbaro make me a fan. I go to the track often now but not to bet and win money, but to watch these animals run. I also just read my guy Barbaro, I got a little teary eyed. I cant wait to see what Nicanor and Lentanor can do.

I have framed pictures of Barbaro at home and have bought the DVD - America's Horse - saw the HBO Movie but it's not available on line anywhere. Have also read all the books about Barbaro and will be starting the book by Edgar Prado. I also watch all the videos on you tube about Barbaro and his brothers - it's still so tears at my heart that he is gone. Love to all Barbaro's connections - they truly are wonderful people.

There's no doubt about it--Big Nick is a striking piece of horseflesh! I am praying he'll be as good as Big Bro Barbaro. He has the right connections, that's for sure. Has Edgar Prado been up to see him yet? I knew he used to come visit Barbaro at New Bolton. I can almost imagine the feeling Edgar would get sitting astride this beautiful colt!

7/4/2008
Barbaro's two brothers are almost as beautiful as Barbaro. It really doesn't matter of they win a race or not by belonging to the Jacksons they will always be treated "SPECIAL" they are very special people. Most throughbred horse owners are only concerned about winning a race and making money. The Jackson's proved that was not the way they treat their horses. These two babies are so lucky to be owned by Barbaro's (people) Mom and Dad,

It was really nice seeing the updated pictures of Nicanor and Lentenor. God takes but then God gives at least twice back.Even if the next foal is a filly, she could be God's replacement for Ruffian or Eight Belles. As long as they stay healthy and safe.

We all hope for another champion thoroughbred like Barbaro much in the same way that Man O'War and Secretariat had mesmerized the Country. Now our hopes and dreams hinge on two (and soon to be three) siblings of Barbaro. I heard of people winning the lottery twice in their lifetime. It's possible to happen with thoroughbreds too. I want Mr. & Mrs. Jackson, Michael Matz and Peter Brette all to experience the euphoria of having an undefeated champion thoroughbred without any sad endings. I pray for it, because I truly believe "all things are possible with God".

I want to thank Ken Desmoreaux for doing the right thing and pulling up Big Brown in the Belmont. Obviously he cares deeply for this beautiful horse. I just hope that Dutrow does right by Big Brown now and retires him and lets him enjoy his life! He deserves to! I knew he would glue his hoof, I just hope and pray that an infection won't develop underneath there. The right thing would have been to scartch Big Brown, but Dutrow cares more about his macho attitude and the money than the welfare of the horse, that is clear from the suspensions he's had for doping over the years. Big Brown, you have nothing to be ashamed of! You are a handsome, awesome champion, but I confewss, Barbaro will always be #1 in my heart!

I rewatched the story of Barbaro again and I can't tell you how much he is missed..On the eve of the Belmont Stakes you only think of what may have occured if the beautiful Barbaro never was injured..The Jacksons and Michael Matz have the BIGGEST HEARTS I have ever known..They did what was best for Barbaro and I will never forget that..I would never run Big Brown with the hoof problem he has. I just hope Mr.Dutrow knowes what he is doing..We don't need anymore tragedies in horse racing

I REALLY hope that Nicanor and Lentenor are as good as Barbaro. I feel terrible about what happened to him. Its sad because, I have Books, a DVD, stuffed animals, EVERYTHING and I know that none of it is going to be the real Barbaro. More than I hope Nicanor and Lentenor are good racers, I hope that they dont get hurt, because after the Barbaro tragedy and then the Eight Belles tragedy a few weeks ago, we dont want or need to see anymore beautiful horses lose their lives!!! I hope Barbaro's legacy lives on in his siblings!!!! I LOVE BARBARO!!!!

Anyone who misses Bryant Gumbel's Real Sport on HBO needs to see it, subject=horse slaughter ...sigh....I actually threw up after seeing it, I forced myself to watch it as I felt it was my duty to witness it...sigh... I start this month volenteering at a mustang rescue here in Maine, we all should step up to the plate and do what we can to save these magnificent animals, each state has horse rescue sites that are always looking for help, google it to see where in your stare you can be of use. Thank You

Yes, me too. Barbaro definitely would have been the next Triple Crown Champion - that's what makes his injury doubly wrong! And not to take anything away from Big Brown but I think justice will be served if Nicanor came up next year and went all the way and won the Triple Crown (for Barbaro) before anyone else can. I'm pulling for Big Brown but I'm torn....I really want Nicanor to win the Triple crown, not someone else. I picked Big Brown in the beginning because he reminded me so much of Barbaro - his looks, his gallop, the way ne runs out way ahead down the stretch, everything. I looked up both their pedigrees and - duh - they are the same horse! No wonder I felt a connection to him. They have the same Grandfathers, great gradfathers, grandmothers, etc - they're almost the same horse. But I still want Nicanor or another one of Barbaro's brothers to win it all - it will be the final triump for the Jacksons, Michael Matz, (Edgar Prado, I hope) and BARBARO!!

To all the great horses who we've loved and lost: Eight Belles, Ruffian, Phar Lap, Go For Wand, Pine Island, Barbaro and the list goes on - this is a little prayer just for you (and us):
“IF YOU BURY HIM IN THIS SPOT, THE SECRET OF WHICH YOU MUST ALREADY HAVE, HE WILL COME TO YOU WHEN YOU CALL – COME TO YOU OVER THE FAR, DIM PASTURES OF DEATH, AND DOWN THE REMEMBERED PATHS TO YOUR SIDE AGAIN. AND THOUGH YOU RIDE OTHER LIVING HORSES THROUGH LIFE, THEY SHALL NOT SHY AT HIM OR RESENT HIM COMING. FOR HE IS YOURS AND HE BELONGS THERE.
PEOPLE MAY SCOFF AT YOU, WHO SEE NO LIGHTEST BLADE OF GRASS BENT BY HIS FOOTFALL, WHO HEAR NO NICKER PITCHED TOO FINE FOR INSENSITIVE EARS. PEOPLE WHO MAY NEVER REALLY LOVE A HORSE. SMILE AT THEM THEN, FOR YOU SHALL KNOW SOMETHING THAT IS HIDDEN FROM THEM, AND WHICH IS WELL WORTH KNOWING.
THE ONE PLACE TO BURY A HORSE IS IN YOUR HEART."
