October 2, 2013
It seems fitting that in only three days Keeneland will kick off the 2013 Fall Racing Season. Appropriately a feature race on opening day is the Grade 1 Alcibiades, named for my grandfather Hal Price Headley's champion two year old of 1929 and foundation broodmare. Among Alcibiades (pictured above) offspring was MENOW, champion two year old and sire of Tom Fool among others. Also, Salaminia, the third dam of the Epsom Derby winner SIR IVOR. Sir Ivor was bred by my mother, Alice Headley Chandler, raised on Mill Ridge Farm and born three years after the death of Hal Price Headley in 1965. As noted by historian Ed Bowen, "Sir Ivor was both harbinger and catalyst of an international pattern of American bred successes in Europe's top races. This pattern saw the world's top horsemen gather at various North American auctions and helped elevate Keeneland to preeminence in the world's Thoroughbred market."
Equally fitting, we introduce the new Mill Ridge web site for it will emphasize the present and future..while learning of the past. Sounds like a lot to do but that is the idea of Price, our 31 year old, who wanted to make it an interactive site with Twitter..a Blog..Facebook..You Tube...and all the latest tools of social media. This generation understands the ability to navigate and make things relevant and interesting while serving its purpose of information.
Thus, my intention is to allow those on the outside..inside. To allow them backstage and into the huddle. This will be accomplished by recalling our family history and six generations that have been archived from scrap books on to CDs. We will allow you inside through photos and stories and videos. The great thing, as I understand it, is you don't have to be a professional photographer or writer. Just someone interested in sharing...something very very special which we have here at Mill Ridge. This is the present..the future...and the past and I welcome you.
