It seems fitting that in only three days Keeneland will kick off the 2013 Fall Racing Season.  Appropriately a feature race on opening day is the Grade 1 Alcibiades, named for my grandfather Hal Price Headley's champion two year old of 1929 and foundation broodmare.  Among Alcibiades (pictured above) offspring was MENOW, champion two year old and sire of Tom Fool among others.  Also, Salaminia, the third dam of the Epsom Derby winner SIR IVOR.  Sir Ivor was bred by my mother, Alice Headley Chandler, raised on Mill Ridge Farm and born three years after the death of Hal Price Headley in 1965.

So many positive things are happening in our sport, I want to celebrate the thread that binds them—improving the experience. I have not done the research to state, definitively, that customers are looking to spend more disposable income on an experience, but anecdotally it feels that way.

The Begum Story

Begum

While the years have brought many examples of our philosophy, maybe the most captivating is the story of BEGUM. A daughter of Alydar’s first crop, out of the 21 year-old mare Rullah Good, BEGUM was born in 1981 without any eyes. Other than her blindness, she was born a strong healthy foal to a loving mother. Knowing she could provide this foal a sound and healthy life, Alice raised BEGUM. She immediately tied a bell around Rullah Good’s neck; so BEGUM could find her, and intentionally plowed around the paddock fence, so BEGUM would be aware of this boundary.
