Alice and Mill Ridge play a very important role in our Thoroughbred operation. Her advice on matings and sales has helped us develop many stakes winners. Mill Ridge raised and sold us Banshee Winds, who is the dam of Eclipse Award winner Banshee Breeze. Jim Tafel
A friend for 20 years, Jim Tafel first began working with Mill Ridge when he purchased Binalong, a son of Mill Ridge’s great mare Begum. Binalong went on to win 8 races including Gulfstream Park Sprint and nearly $350,000. Knowing the story of Binalong's mother Begum, and Mill Ridge’s treatment of the horse, he again supported the consignment when he purchased Banshee Winds in 1991 from the Mill Ridge. She showed talent being Graded stakes placed as a two-year old; but holds a special place in the Tafel's heart as the Dam of their Champion 3 year old filly: Banshee Breeze.
Utilizing Nicoma for consulting on matings, Jim and Headley had immediate success selecting and admiring the first year stallion Street Cry for his mare Bedazzled. The result is the 2006 Champion two-year old STREET SENSE who won the Breeders Cup Juvenile in 2006 and the Kentucky Derby in 2007. Street Sense; a feat in the history of Thoroughbred racing was the first winner of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile ever to win the Kentucky Derby.
