Hidden Treat forced the early issue and delivered as the 2-1 favorite in her 5 1/2-furlong debut over the Laurel lawn Oct. 23. She worked a solid four furlongs in :48 3/5 (3/29) over this strip Dec. 14 and was a bit overlooked while making her first attempt on dirt here. Placed within striking distance from her inside draw, she was guided out three deep entering the far turn, gained a narrow advantage as they straightened for home and had enough left in the tank to hang on and remain perfect. “We wanted to try her on the dirt three weeks ago at Laurel, but the race didn’t go, so I told [owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson of Lael Stables], ‘Let’s train her straight to [the Sandpiper] and see what happens,’ ” trainer Arnaud Delacour said. “It worked out.” He added, “She had done nothing wrong on the dirt in her morning training, so we thought we would take a shot.” Hidden Treat’s two-time winning dam Maraschino Red brought $900,000 from the Jacksons as a FTFFEB juvenile in 2008.

J R 'S HOLIDAY (c, 2, Harlan's Holiday--Diza, by Empire Maker)
Going out for a barn that excels with layoff returnees, the juvenile’s morning line quote was bet in half at odds of 6-1. The colt was taken back soon after the break and raced at the rear of the pack as Little Mo (Uncle Mo) and Parmel Landing (Wilburn) shared leadership duties through a half-mile in :50.02. J R’s Holiday commenced a
sweeping bid on the turn, avoided trouble when Little Mo veered out sharply in midstretch, and rallied to earn a 3/4-
length win over 51-1 longshot Frontier Ranger (U S Ranger).  The winner is out of a dam who is a half-sister to MGISWs Cetewayo (His Majesty) and Dynaforce (Dynaformer), as well as GSW & GISP Bowman Mill (Kris S.). In more recent memory, this is also the same female family that produced MGSW & MGISP Willcox Inn (Harlan’s Holiday). Sales History: $40,000 Ylg '14 KEESEP; $55,000 2yo '15 FTFMAR. Lifetime Record: SP, 7-2-1-1, $71,495.

Cali Star looked like a new horse in her first attempt for the Marty Wolfson barn, running away by five lengths in wire-to-wire fashion at that level at Gulfstream West Nov. 18. Placed within striking distance from her inside draw here, she scraped the paint to vie for the lead at the top of the stretch and outkicked her stablemate home to register a career high.
