Fall Graduation

October 15, 2013

long Fall shadows

We have been very blessed this past week with some remarkable fall weather: warm cloudless days replaced by crisp starry nights. Ample sun and enough green in the grass that one’s thirst to be outside cannot be satisfied.

It’s a wonderful time for reflection on the farm. Our yearlings have been sold (except the few that sell at Fasig-Tipton next week) or shipped to their next phase. Our work developing their bodies and minds complete.

Present, Future and Past

October 2, 2013

It seems fitting that in only three days Keeneland will kick off the 2013 Fall Racing Season.  Appropriately a feature race on opening day is the Grade 1 Alcibiades, named for my grandfather Hal Price Headley's champion two year old of 1929 and foundation broodmare.  Among Alcibiades (pictured above) offspring was MENOW, champion two year old and sire of Tom Fool among others.  Also, Salaminia, the third dam of the Epsom Derby winner SIR IVOR.  Sir Ivor was bred by my mother, Alice Headley Chandler, raised on Mill Ridge Farm and born three years after the death of Hal Price Headley in 1965.

Exciting Times!

October 1, 2013

So many positive things are happening in our sport, I want to celebrate the thread that binds them—improving the experience. I have not done the research to state, definitively, that customers are looking to spend more disposable income on an experience, but anecdotally it feels that way.
