Alice Headley Featured in 1990s “Thoroughbred World”

Recently, Stu Kirshenbaum shared a feature of Alice Chandler in the first episode of a magazine show he produced in the 1990's called "Thoroughbred World."

Enjoy this travel back in time to hear Alice on how imperative she believes both luck and “doing it well” were to keep Mill Ridge going. She says, “I have to pray that I have good luck. And I have to work harder at it.”

Alice reflects on her father wanting to win the Kentucky Derby “in the worst way possible,” and how at the end of the first race meet at Keeneland, she recalls the track was just $20.19 in the black. She also shares the remarkable story of Begum, the mare born with no eyes who went on to raise three foals, all three stakes winners at the time of this story.

She reflects that she “never wanted Mill Ridge to be a department store. I’d like for it to be a boutique.”

“I walk out the door, thank God I’ve got it. Hope I can keep it. And go from there.”

Our appreciation to Stu Kirshenbaum for dusting off this beautiful piece of history for our enjoyment.
